They are funny. They are smart. They have game. They are full of surprises. These men will say and do things that will amuse you.

I too have suffered my own share amusement at their hand. Here are a few memorable experiences from my archives.

  1. Enter The Wardrobe:

You know how single rooms have imaginary lines? One room multi tasking as the bedroom, sitting room, kitchen… etc. Well, that was my room at the time.

This one time I hosted a guy. Later, I wanted to change- it was something small. I saw no need to send him out. So I just asked him to close his eyes or turn around. He refused. Unbelievable!
He just starred at me unmoved with a hint of a smile on his face.

I knew I couldn’t win an argument with him. I grabbed my big lesu(wrapper) and covered myself as I changed. Meanwhile, dude was just looking at me hustle. He informed me in Luganda to enter the wardrobe.

“Yingira mu wardrobe”.

I laugh each time I remember that statement. And yes, my room had wardrobes….but that audacity! Telling me what to do in my own room? That gender!

  1. Kissed Me Goodbye:

I was invited for an Introduction ceremony upcountry a few years back. I travelled Thursday night and used Friday to relax. The event was on Saturday. I bonded so much with the last born who was four years younger than me. He was handsome. His height and beard made him appear to be older. Last borns always sprout like weeds.

Long story short, I think he kinda fell for me.
I had actually been warned, this guy had a thing for older women. I was more into his older brother though, who was eight years older than me.

Sunday came and I had to leave. I bid him farewell at 11:30am. My bus was leaving at 12pm for Kampala. We walked until we got a boda going to town.

He bargained with the boda man. I climbed on the boda and sat. I turned to the guy and waved at him goodbye. My mind was so focused on being early for my bus.

Him: Eh, Not even a hug.

I smiled guiltily. I sat up straight on the boda and reached out to him for a hug. He hugged me. Before pulling away though, he kissed me. On the cheek.

What had just happened? True, Ugandans are bold, but since when have we been that bold? These things don’t even happen in Kampala!

I guess I missed the memo.

  1. Let’s Run Away:

This guy was new in my life.
How he got my number and from whom still remains a mystery. He was cute, funny and joked a lot. He had a girlfriend, so our “friendship” was casual from day one.

I was in the middle of a world war myself with the love of my life….so this new guy was a perfect distraction.

One day, I got a text, “Baby tugende, tudduke”.
I just laughed when I read it. He told me that we should just run away together…..go to Kenya for two weeks and just have a lovely time.

Of course this was a beautiful, tempting and thoughtful idea. But mehn, mine wasn’t a life I could just wake up and walk away from without causing havoc. My life was not my own.

Nonetheless, the concept of elopement seemed far fetched, a reality true in only novels and movies, -until that young man crossed my path.

The End.
